AZ652 astro photography

Post by AL-gorge »

I have taken some really nice zoom photos of the moon. But I cannot get good photos of stars, meteors or the Milky Way -- the stars are more like fuzzy dots instead of sharp points of light. I'm using manual settings, lens at default minimum length (not zoomed), focused to infinity, on a tripod with timer delay after pressing the shutter, F/2.9, ISO1600 or 3200. Why can't the camera get stars in focus?

I got some really good photos of stars and meteor showers with the Kodak EasyShare Z990, using manual settings and focused to infinity. It's puzzling to me that I can't do the same thing with the AZ652.

Any tips you can provide for specific manual settings would be appreciated.

P.S. firmware version on camera is 1.04. Does 1.05 update fix the infinity focus?

FYI general tip:
Set your lens to manual focus mode and focus on a bright star manually. The live view feature on many cameras can help magnify into the scene or you can set your lens to approximately the infinity marker. Once done, leave it there.

Problem: the screen on the camera is so small that focus may look likes it's good, but when viewing the images on a computer screen, the stars are still fuzzy dots. The manual focus options for distance go up to 30K and then there's a jump to Infinity. Maybe the camera has to be zoomed in quite a ways, which will require adjusting other settings (exposure time, etc.), but I have not found the "sweet spot" for getting stars in crystal clear focus, even after hundreds of photos.

AZ652 astro photography Post by SLIONLE » Tue Aug 09, 2022 10:26 am Try doing it in bulb mode, so you don't have to worry about the exposure. Also, if you have a remote (not a universal remote, but one from a camera store that allows you to use it as a remote shutter), you can use that, as long as you line up how long your exposure will be (in seconds). Then when you press the shutter, you can look at the camera to see if it's still open, or if it closed. Then make sure there's no camera shake when you press it again. Put your lens in manual focus and manually focus on a bright star. You can zoom into the scene using the live view function on many cameras, or you can set your lens to roughly the infinity marker. When finished, leave it alone.

The focus may appear to be good on the camera's little screen, but when the photographs are viewed on a computer screen, the stars are still fuzzy dots.

The issue with fuzzy star photos on your AZ652 camera might be due to its lens quality and sensor size. The Kodak EasyShare Z990 may have a better lens and sensor combination for astrophotography, allowing you to capture sharp stars. Unfortunately, the AZ652 might not perform as well in low-light conditions. To improve your results, try using a wider aperture (lower F-number) and higher ISO settings, and consider post-processing techniques to enhance your star photos.
