An ANSI flange is manufactured per the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. ANSI flanges are typically made of forged steel but can also be made of other materials, such as stainless steel or cast iron. ANSI B16.5
ANSI B16.5 stands as a fundamental standard governing the specifications for pipe flanges and flanged fittings within the piping industry. Its scope ranges from NPS 1/2 (DN 15) to NPS 24 (DN 600), making it the most widely adopted flange standard in this sector. This standard was meticulously developed under the purview of the sectional Committee B16 within the American Standards Association (ASA).

ANSI CLASS FLANGE TYPES

Weld Neck Flange: Weld neck flanges are the strongest type of ANSI flange. They are ideal for high-pressure applications and applications where the flange must withstand vibration and shock. However, they are more expensive and easier to install than slip-on flanges.
Lap Joint Flange: Lap joint flanges are often used in applications where the flange needs to be removable, such as for maintenance or inspection. They are also used in applications where the pipe is made of a material that cannot be welded. However, lap joint flanges are less strong than other flanges and are unsuitable for high-pressure applications.
Threaded Flange: Threaded flanges are easy to install and are relatively inexpensive. However, they are less strong than other types of flanges and are not suitable for high-pressure applications.
Socket Weld Flange: Socket weld flanges are a good compromise between slip-on flanges and weld neck flanges. They are stronger than slip-on flanges but easier to install than weld neck flanges. Socket weld flanges are commonly used in medium-pressure applications.
Blind Flange: Blind flanges are used to close off the end of a pipe or vessel. They are solid flanges with no bore. Blind flanges are commonly used in applications wheel.
